How to Prepare for Your Spray Tan: The Ultimate Pre Spray Tanning Guide
If you’re looking for a professional spray tan in Cork, preparing your skin properly is the key to achieving a flawless, natural looking glow.
At Haus of Beauty in Killumeny, Ovens, I welcome clients from Ballincollig, Macroom, Bandon, Bishopstown and all across Cork who want a spray tan that develops evenly, lasts longer and fades beautifully.
Whether you’re tanning for your wedding, a holiday, a special occasion or simply because you love that healthy glow, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before your appointment.
Why is Spray Tan Preparation So Important?
A spray tan develops on the outermost layer of your skin. If that layer is dry, uneven or covered in old tan, oils or product build up your new tan wont develop evenly as it should.
Think of your skin like a freshly painted wall a smooth, clean surface always gives the best finish.
Taking the time to prepare properly will help your spray tan:
Apply more evenly
Develop beautifully
Last longer
Fade naturally
Reduce patchiness around dry areas
A little preparation really does make all the difference.
Start Preparing Your Skin Early
Although most preparation happens the day before your appointment, healthy skin starts several days beforehand.
If you know you have an event coming up, begin looking after your skin by:
Drinking plenty water
Moisturising daily with an oil free moisturiser
Removing any stubborn patches of old fake tan
Healthy, hydrated skin provides the perfect base for a long lasting spray tan.
Remove Any Old Fake Tan
Applying a new spray tan over old tan is one of the biggest reasons for patchy results.
If you have any remaining fake tan, remove it completely before your appointment.
Using a tan remover together with an exfoliating mitt usually works the best. Spend a little extra time on the elbows, knees, ankles, wrists and feet where old tan tends to cling.
Starting with a clean canvas allows your new tan to develop evenly.
Exfoliate The Day Before
Exfoliation is one of the most important steps in spray tan preparation.
The day before your appointment, gently exfoliate your entire body using an exfoliating mitt or an oil free body scrub.
Pay particular attention to:
Elbows
Knees
Ankles
Feet
Hands
Underarms
Any dry patches
Avoid oil based scrubs, as they can leave a barrier on the skin and affect how your spray tan develops.
If your skin is particularly dry, begin by gentle exfoliation a few days before your appointment rather than scrubbing agressively the night before.
Hair Removal
If you’re planning to shave or wax, timing is important.
Waxing
Wax at least 48 hours before your spray tan.
This allows the skin to settle and gives your pores time to close, helping your tan to apply more evenly.
Shaving
Shave approximately 24 hours before your appointment.
Shaving immediately beforehand can leave pores open and may cause tiny dark dots to appear after the tan develops.
Moisturise BUT Not on the Day
This is probably the mistake I see most often.
In the days leading up to your appointment, moisturise your skin every day. Well hydrated skin holds a tan much better than dry skin.
However, on the day of your spray tan your skin should be completely free from moisturiser.
Lotions, oils and creams create a barrier that can prevent the tanning solution from developing evenly.
Arrive With Clean, Product Free Skin
On the morning of your appointment, have a shower and arrive with clean skin. This is so important especially if you apply moisturiser the night before there will be a barrier on the skin. This leaves a green tone to the area affected and the tan wont apply evenly.
On the day of your appointment please avoid wearing:
Moisturiser
Body Oil
Perfume
Deodorant
Make up
SPF
Even products you can’t see or feel can interfere with your spray tan and affect the finished result.
What Should I Wear?
Loose, dark clothing is always the best choice after your spray tan.
I recommend:
Loose tracksuit bottoms or wide leg trousers
An oversized T-shirt or hoodie
Loose underwear if you choose to wear any
Sliders or flip flops
Try to avoid:
Skinny jeans
Leggings
Tight bras
Socks
Tight sleeves
Tights
Friction from clothing can rub against your developing tan and leave marks.
Jewellery and Contact Lenses
Where possible, remove jewellery before your appointment to prevent untanned areas underneath rings, bracelets and necklaces.
If you wear contact lenses, there is no need to remove them. You can comfortably keep them in during yoiur spray tan.
Nails and Other Beauty Treatments
If you’re planning a manicure or pedicure, its usually best to have your nails done before your spray tan.
Acetone, soaking and filing can remove your tan from the hands and feet.
If you’re having several beauty treatments before a special occasion, I generally recommend any treatments involving oils or exfoliation should be completed before your spray tan.
When Should You Book Your Spray Tan?
For most occasions, I recommend booking your spray tan 2 days before your event.
This gives your tan time to fully develop and allows you to complete your first rinse before the big day.
If you’re getting married, your bridal spray tan is usually best booked two days before your wedding, giving you a beautiful glow that photographs perfectly.
Wedding Spray Tan Preparation
Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life, so it’s worth planning ahead.
I always recommed booking a trial spray tan several weeks before your wedding.
A trial allows us to:
Find your perfect shade
See how your skin develops the tan
Make sure you’re happy with the colour
See how it photographs
Make any adjustments before your wedding day
Every bride is different, and my goal is to create a natural looking glow that enhances your skin rather than overpowering it.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Some of the most common mistakes I see include:
Applying moisturiser before your tan
Forgetting to remove old fake tan
Using oil based exfoliators
Shaving immediately before your spray tan
Wearing tight clothing afterwards
Arriving wearing deodorant, perfume or make up
Avoiding these simple mistakes can make a huge difference to your final result.
