Spray Tan FAQs Answered: Everything You Need to Know
Thinking about getting a spray tan but still have a few questions?
Whether you're booking your first professional spray tan or you're already a regular, it's completely normal to wonder how long your tan will last, when you can shower, what to wear and whether your tan will look natural.
At Haus of Beauty, I want you to feel confident and know exactly what to expect before you arrive.
So I've answered some of the most frequently asked spray tan questions below.
1. What is a spray tan?
A spray tan is a professional tanning treatment that gives your skin a temporary, sun-kissed appearance without exposure to UV rays.
The tanning solution contains an active ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts with the outermost layer of your skin to create a temporary tan.
Unlike sunbathing or using a sunbed, a spray tan doesn't rely on UV exposure to create its colour.

2. Will my spray tan look orange?
This is probably one of the most common questions people ask!
A professional spray tan should be selected to complement your natural skin tone and the result you're looking for.
Choosing an appropriate shade and having your tan professionally applied can help create a natural looking, even glow.
Your preparation and aftercare can also affect the final result.

3. How long does a spray tan last?
A spray tan typically lasts around 5–7 days, although this can vary from person to person.
Your skin, preparation, aftercare and lifestyle can all affect how long your tan lasts.
Keeping your skin moisturised and avoiding excessive exfoliation can help your tan fade more evenly.
For more tips, read [How to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer].
4. How long does a spray tan take?
The actual application is relatively quick, we allow 30 minutes for a spray tan appointment.
Your appointment will include time to prepare your skin, apply the tanning solution evenly, allow the tan to dry, set with setting powder and make sure you're happy with the result.
5. What should I wear to my spray tan appointment?
Loose, comfortable and dark clothing is ideal.
Avoid tight clothing such as skinny jeans, leggings or fitted tops immediately after your appointment, as these can rub against freshly applied tanning solution.
A loose dress, oversized trousers or comfortable pyjamas are great options.

6. Can I shower straight after my spray tan?
No you'll need to allow your tan time to develop before showering.
The exact development time will depend on the tanning solution being used and the result you're aiming for, so I'll give you specific instructions at your appointment.
When it is time to shower, use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing your skin.
7. Can I exercise after a spray tan?
It's best to avoid exercising immediately after your appointment.
Sweating, friction and tight workout clothing can interfere with the tanning solution while it is developing.
Try to schedule your appointment when you have some time afterwards to relax and let your tan develop properly.
8. Can I swim after a spray tan?
Swimming can cause your spray tan to fade more quickly.
Chlorine, prolonged exposure to water and frequent swimming can all contribute to the tan fading sooner.
If you're getting a spray tan before a holiday, keep in mind that swimming regularly may affect how long your tan lasts.
9. Should I moisturise after my spray tan?
Yes!
Once your tan has fully developed, keeping your skin moisturised is one of the simplest ways to help maintain your glow and encourage an even fade.
Use a gentle body moisturiser regularly and pay particular attention to naturally dry
areas such as your elbows, knees and ankles.
10. Should I exfoliate before a spray tan?
Yes, exfoliation is an important part of preparing your skin.
Ideally, exfoliate the day before your appointment, rather than immediately beforehand.
This helps remove dead skin cells and gives you a smooth base for your spray tan.
Avoid applying heavy oils or moisturisers immediately after exfoliating if you're preparing for your appointment.
For the complete preparation routine, read [How to Prepare for Your Spray Tan].
11. Should I shave before my spray tan?
If you normally shave, it's best to do this before your appointment, rather than immediately afterwards.
Shaving shortly after your tan can affect the surface of the colour.
Ideally, shave the day before your appointment so your skin has time to settle.
12. Can I wear deodorant or perfume to my appointment?
It's best to arrive with clean skin and avoid applying unnecessary products immediately before your spray tan.
Deodorant, perfume, moisturiser, body oils and other products can potentially affect how the tanning solution applies.
If you're unsure about what you should or shouldn't use before your appointment, just ask me.
13. Can I get a spray tan if I've never had one before?
Absolutely!
You don't need to be experienced with spray tanning to book an appointment.
If it's your first time, I'll explain what happens, help you choose a suitable shade and talk you through the aftercare you'll need.
You don't need to know exactly what shade you want before you arrive.
14. How do I choose the right spray tan shade?
Your ideal shade depends on your natural skin tone, undertones, the occasion and how deep you'd like your tan to be.
A darker shade isn't necessarily a better shade.
The aim is to create a result that complements your natural colouring and gives you the level of glow you're looking for.

15. Can I get a spray tan before a wedding?
Yes, professional spray tans can be a great option before a wedding or special occasion.
However, it's important to plan your timing carefully and, ideally, avoid trying a completely new shade for the first time immediately before your wedding day.
If you're a first time spray tan client, consider having a trial beforehand so you can see how the colour develops and fades on your skin.
16. How far in advance should I get a spray tan before an event?
The golden rule in tanning is 2 days before your event.
17. Can I get a spray tan if I have dry skin?
Yes, but preparation is particularly important if your skin is dry.
Dry areas can absorb tanning solution differently and may cause the tan to fade more quickly or unevenly.
Regular moisturising in the days leading up to your appointment can help keep your skin in good condition.
Just make sure your skin is free from heavy moisturiser, oils and other products before your appointment.
18. Can I spray tan during pregnancy?
Yes you can get a spray tan.
19. How often can I get a spray tan?
There's no single schedule that works for everyone.
How often you have a spray tan will depend on how quickly your previous tan fades, your skin and how you like your tan to look.
If you're having regular spray tans, it's important to properly remove any remaining tan and prepare your skin before your next appointment.
20. How do I stop my spray tan from fading unevenly?
The key is good aftercare.
Moisturise regularly, avoid excessive exfoliation, keep showers gentle and be mindful of activities such as swimming that can speed up fading.
When you're ready for your next tan, properly exfoliating any remaining colour will help give you a clean, even base.
